"but i have a question, i actually understand that the way you were going with this there was no happy ending possible. but why kill off fan then. i mean he had had the most intimate encounter with someone he loves more then anything. why just after that? why couldn't Dan have his thoughts on the last day of their trip and then this? why didn't you leave a bit of time even if it was a day between his discovery of phil's love and his realization of homesickness? was this a strategy of some kind?"

that was the whole point of two roads meet. it was about how fate waits for no-one and how crucial it is to speak at the right moment. dan was always homesick after realizing how disappointing earth was compared to the stars given that he was just as lonely and didn’t fit in with any humans until he met phil. then when he meets phil and they fall in love, they’re both too afraid to say to the other what they really felt and before they know it, it’s too late and dan’s dead. (gone back to the stars) that’s why i used the concept of a roadtrip and the word “road” in the title, because i was portraying human life as a one-way road that although you can change the direction of, you can never stop. if i left a bit of time to let dan tell phil everything before he died then the whole fic would’ve been pointless haha
